Vitamin D is crucial for the body, as it helps to keep your bones, teeth and muscles healthy, said the NHS. Without enough vitamin D - which is also known as the ‘sunshine’ supplement - it’s difficult to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. A severe lack of the vitamin may even lead to bone deformities, rickets, or osteomalacia. You could be at risk of a vitamin D deficiency without even knowing it, as the symptoms are very vague, said ITV This Morning’s Dr Chris Steele.
Signs of a vitamin D deficiency are vague, but are also very common, revealed Dr Chris.
The most common warning symptoms include muscular weakness, fatigue and tiredness, he said.
Some people may even describe as feeling “tired all the time”, and that’s a sign to check your vitamin D levels.
“We need vitamin D for virtually every cell in our body,” Dr Chris told Express.co.uk.
“The sad thing is that over 50 per cent of the population are suffering from low levels of vitamin D.
“The symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency are sort of vague, but very common - muscular weakness, fatigue, tiredness.
“GPs do measure vitamin D levels now with blood tests.
“It’s something we’re very aware of - especially the implications for diseases, as well as just those early symptoms of fatigue, weakness and low mood.”
Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a number of diseases, including heart disease, cancers, dementia and arthritis.
You could lower your risk of the condition by simply spending more time outside, and in direct sunlight.
But, more than half of all adults in the UK have admitted to spending less than half an hour outside every day, it’s been revealed.
Around 80 per cent of working adults say they don’t see any daylight at all during the winter months, according to a survey by Go Outdoors.
One of the easiest ways to avoid a deficiency is to do more exercise in the fresh air, added Dr Chris.
All you need to do is 20 minutes of exercise a day to avoid a deficiency - even in cloudy conditions, he said.
You could also lower your risk of a vitamin D deficiency by eating certain foods.
The best food sources of vitamin D include oily fish, eggs, mushrooms, and some fortified products.
It’s also recommended that everyone takes a 10mcg vitamin D supplement during the winter, added the Department of Health.
