VELLORE: Counting of votes, polled in the elections to Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, has begun at the counting centre located in the premises of Ranipet Institute of Technology, Wallajahpet, in Vellore district.
As many as 10,24,352 votes, polled on August 5, will be taken up for counting during the day-long process amidst tight security. The constituency has got a total electorate of 14, 32, 555. The percentage of votes polled is 71.51. The polling witnessed some late spike after the turnout was sluggish in the initial hours.
About 324 counting staff, including supervisors, assistants and micro-observers, will be carrying out the duty of vote counting in the presence of agents of the candidates.
As many as 14 tables have been provided for each of the Assembly segment for vote counting. Vellore Lok Sabha constituency consists of six Assembly segments-Anaicut, Vellore, KV Kuppam, Gudiyatham, Vaniyambadi and Ambur.
AC Shanmugam of AIADMK and DM Kathir Anand of DMK have locked in a direct fight in the polls to the Fort City where actual polling scheduled for April 18 was rescinded by the Election Commission of India following huge cash seizure from men allegedly associated with DMK leaders.
Apart from the candidates of the two major Dravidian parties, 26 others including Naam Tamilar Katchi’s S Deepalakshmi is also in the fray.
Led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Pravesh Kumar, a contingent of 1000 police personnel is deployed for guarding the counting centre where only authorized officers and counting agents are allowed to move into.
