The Tata Altroz is based on Tata’s Impact Design 2.0 philosophy.
It is the first car to be based on Tata’s ALFA ARC platform.
It will get a floating 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
It will be offered with both petrol and diesel engines starting June 2019.
Expect an all-electric version to make its debut by September 2020.
The Tata Altroz is the homegrown carmaker’s upcoming premium hatchback that will go up against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz, Hyundai Elite i20 and Volkswagen Polo. From what we’ve seen so far from the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the Altroz looks promising, and Tata says it will be launched in mid-2019. If you’re interested in what the Altroz has to offer, here are some detailed images of the hatchback.
The Altroz is based on Tata’s IMPACT Design 2.0 philosophy that debuted with the Harrier.
It is based on the 45X concept that was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. It gets an aggressive front end with sleek, upswept projector headlamps and D-shaped fog lamps below it. The glossy black honeycomb mesh grille gets a chrome underline, giving the fascia a premium feel.
Move to the side and you notice a black coloured sash under the large window line. It also gets a distinctive kink under the A-pillar. The car showcased at the Swiss show features 17-inch alloy wheels. The India-spec model is expected to get 16-inch alloys, like its rivals.
The “cockpit-inspired” cabin of the Altroz features funky body-coloured accents around the AC vents.
The Altroz’ cabin looks quite classy with a hint of silver in the upper half of the dashboard and ambient lighting around the centre console. Expect the ambient lighting system to offer multiple colour options.
A 7-inch free-floating touchscreen infotainment system takes pride of place on the dashboard. It is likely to pack both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The user interface looks similar to the one seen on the Harrier.
The quality of materials looks quite decent. However, the soft leather door pads are unlikely to make it to the production model. But the silver finished inside door levers will. The show car features an expensive suede headliner. Will it make it to the production car? We have our doubts.
The Altorz will get two 1.2-litre petrol engine options. One will be the turbocharged unit from the Nexon while the other is the naturally-aspirated engine that powers the Tiago and Tigor. While a 5-speed manual transmission will be standard, expect the Altroz to be offered with an AMT as well.
The controls for the AC get a neat little chrome strip that adds character to the cabin.
The Altroz gets a flat-bottom steering wheel with controls for audio and telephony. There's glossy grey finish in the lower half of the steering. The steering wheel looks sporty when compared to the ones on current Tata cars like the Nexon and Tiago.
Front seats get decent bolstering. They also get adjustable headrests along with a centre armrest.
Rear passengers get dedicated air con vents along with an armrest. Sadly, the latter does not feature cup holders. The seats get a mix of leather and fabric upholstery.
The Altroz is likely to get an ‘Eco’ mode like other modern cars from Tata Motors.
Boot space should be on par with rivals and spacious enough to gobble up a weekend’s worth of luggage.
