TMC MP Nusrat Jahan’s ‘sindoor,’ Vande Mataram and touching of Speaker’s feet dominate social media conversations

Bengali actress-turned-politician Nusrat Jahan, on Tuesday, took the oath of office as the Lok Sabha MP in parliament. The newly-elected MP from West Bengal’s Bashirhat constituency had skipped the opening day of the Lok Sabha to get married to one Nikhil Jain.

The TMC MP on Tuesday arrived in the parliament by sporting the traditional sindoor, a sign that she was married. Attired in a traditional saree, she introduced herself as Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jain and swore in the name of Ishwar. She concluded her oath by chanting Vande Mataram and proceeded straight to Speaker Om Birla to touch his feet.

This soon became a topic of intense social media conversations with right-wing supporters hailing her as the embodiment of a true Indian.





Also taking oath today was Nusrat Jahan’s friend and TMC MP from Jadavpur, Mimi Chakraborty.

Last week, Nusrat Jahan had entered into wedlock with businessman Nikhil Jain. The two had exchanged wedding vows at Six Senses Kaplankaya, a beach resort near the town of Bodrum in Turkey.
