Susanna Reid, 48, has admitted she was “furious and upset” when she discovered the involvement of her image in a “diet scam”. The Good Morning Britain presenter, who credits cutting alcohol and snacking from her diet as the key reasons behind her recent weight loss, explained she “would never flog” diet pills. However, the “diet scandal” which used her image, was promoting “keto diet pills”. Opening up about the issue, Susanna recalled in her Daily Mail column: “Six months ago, I received a message on social media from a follower, complaining she hadn’t received the ‘keto diet pills’ she’d ordered after I allegedly claimed they’d helped me shed almost two stone.
“Other messages followed: one woman said her mother paid £100 after seeing me ‘advertise’ the pills, but they’d never arrived.”
Detailing her shock over the scam, she continued: “I was furious and upset.
"I don’t credit diet pills for my weight loss. I would never flog any ‘weight-loss’ supplement.
“It was all a con by scammers who’d used my photo. Still, I was devastated that people were out of pocket because of an ad falsely bearing my name.”
Susanna went on to reveal how stunned she was by how quickly the scam spread, as it even reached some of her friends.
She added: “I also faced inquiries from friends concerned I had packed in my job to go into the weight-loss industry.Susanna Reid addresses being used for ‘diet scandal’ (Image: GETTY • ITV)Susanna Reid was shocked about the diet scam (Image: GETTY)
“One celebrity pal asked for help for a relative to lose weight, while a respected journalist wanted to slim for a wedding.
“I was outraged and horrified at how quickly this scam spread, all on the strength of my supposed endorsement.”
Fortunately, the Advertising Standards Authority got involved and took the adverts down.
She said: “I don't do adverts full stop, if you see an advert including me, it's not real.Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid host GMB together (Image: GETTY)Susanna Reid lost weight after cutting out alcohol and snacks (Image: GETTY)
“A woman got in touch with me asking when she can expect to receive her diet pills and I literally don't know anything about it.
“I just can't understand how they're not taken down straight away."
Clarifying how she really lost weight, Susanna divulged to Prima Magazine: “I’ve lost a stone-and-a-half and I feel fantastic."
Explaining her decision to lose weight, the star added: "This time last year, I went to the doctor with a skin problem and he told me I could do with losing some weight.
"It turned out I was at the upper end of my BMI and, I have to admit, I’d been feeling a little heavy for a while."
Susanna added: “The good feeling of doing exercise is unbeatable.”
