Shane Warne and Nasser Hussain described the level of umpiring on day one of the first Ashes Test as ‘horrific’ and ‘shocking’.
Umpires Joel Wilson and Aleem Dar had a day to forget at Edgbaston, with three of England’s first seven dismissals only going in their favour after reviews.
A number of other errors were made, with David Warner surviving a nick-off to his first delivery and James Pattinson giving out LBW when the ball would have missed the stumps.
Shortly after Pattinson’s dismissal, which left Australia 122-8, Peter Siddle was given out only for replays to show a big inside edge.
Australia legend Warne tweeted: ‘England are bowling very well. The umpiring has been horrific from ball one and so has the reviews process of the right ones from Australia.
‘And the batting has lacked any intent as the Australians have looked nervous.’
Former England captain Hussain added: ‘The umpires have had a shocking day. We all know it’s a difficult job but it’s been really poor.’
