Zoya Akhtar's upcoming film 'Gully Boy' has been making the headlines ever since the film was announced. The trailer of the much-anticipated venture was released on Wednesday, January 9, and ahead of the same, lead actors Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt addressed a trailer launch in Mumbai along with director Zoya Akhtar and producer Farhan Akhtar.
During the launch event, director Zoya Akhtar cleared the air of speculations about the film being based on the life of Indian rapper Divine, who rose to the height of success starting from a humble beginning. She denied all such claims and said that it is not a biopic on Divine, rather it is inspired by his music. The filmmaker also revealed that the Divine and ace musician Naezy worked with her on the film to add an original essence.
Zoya clarified that the film was completely fictional and that she came up with the idea after coming across Divine's 'Gully rap' in 2016.
As per media reports, Rapper Divine reacted to Zoya's statement and agreed to the same confirming the film is not a biopic. He reportedly stated that it tells the story of 'hip-hop from the gully' and not any particular rapper as such.
Opening up about how he connected to the making of the project, he said that Zoya reached out to him a couple of years back after seeing one of his gigs, and wanted to make a film on gully hip-hop, which he agreed to, thinking its a way he can extend his message to more people. However, the rapper took no credit of Ranveer Singh's epic talent of rapping and praised him for his hard work in acing the skill.
Directed by Zoya Akhtar, 'Gully Boy' will release on February 14, 2019. The film has already raised expectations of the audience with its rap-packed trailer and lead pair Ranveer and Alia's splendid performance in the preview. Moreover, the film has been selected for an international film festival, which already speaks volumes about what to expect. It will be co-produced by Zoya Akhtar's Tiger Baby and Excel Entertainment productions.
