- OnePlus TV will be offered in a total of four screen sizes in all its global markets.
- Just like Oxygen OS for its phones, there will be unique Android-based software powering the OnePlus TV.
- There is talk of OnePlus TV launching in late September or early October.
That OnePlus is making a TV is well-known. The company talked about it last year. Albeit while announcing that it was making a TV, OnePlus had also said that it would be a while before the OnePlus TV sees the light of the day. The idea was that the OnePlus TV would not be released until its 'perfect' by OnePlus standards. It seems that the TV that OnePlus is making is now ready for the market and we are looking at an imminent launch in August 2019. There is no still specific launch date, the hardware, specs, features and price of the OnePlus TV are all mystery for now. But one thing is for sure. The TV from OnePlus is coming.
The only official information available regarding the OnePlus TV so far is the name. Yes, as expected, OnePlus is calling it the OnePlus TV - quite apt for the brand's first smart TV. However, while OnePlus talked a great deal on how it designed its logo, it never mentioned any other detail about the TV. All OnePlus has been saying is that the OnePlus TV will offer a connected home environment.
But there are some details floating around on the web. Leaks have come, so here is everything that we know about the OnePlus TV.
OnePlus is aiming to please big screen lovers
One of the major leaks regarding the OnePlus TV was the model line-up. According to a report, OnePlus will offer a total of four screen sizes in all its global markets. The standard screen sizes will be 55-inches and 65-inches, both of which will be available across all markets. For the US and China markets, there will be a bigger 75-inch model available. India will also get an exclusive model at the launch. OnePlus is reportedly testing a 43-inch model for the Indian market. So in other words, in India, OnePlus TV is likely to be offered with a 43-inch screen or with 55-inch screen.
This suggests that OnePlus is aiming at the premium smart TV segment instead of attacking the budget segment. This is strategy is different from the likes of Xiaomi -- it has the Mi TV 4 -- that targets more mainstream market. The OnePlus 43-inch TV would be the most affordable OnePlus TV and in India, it could be its highest selling model.
OnePlus TV will be a unique Android TV
It seems just like the Oxygen OS makes the OnePlus phones special, there will be unique Android-based software powering the OnePlus TV.
Yet again, there are reports highlighting the certification document from Bluetooth SIG, which suggests that OnePlus TV will be running on Android TV OS. However, the document also mentions unique Android TVs. This is surprising as Google's Android TV platform doesn't allow manufacturers to modify much of the interface or features. Since OnePlus has been working with Google for its smartphones for long, it seems that the OnePlus TV may benefit with special modifications to its Android TV OS. After all, OnePlus has been consistently stressing that it wants to provide a smart and connected home environment that could possibly be achieved with custom software.
OLED screens could be an option for high-end models
This is a wild rumour but it is smart not to ignore it. Many believe that OnePlus will offer both LCD and OLED panels on the OnePlus TV. The LCD panels will be available on the lower-priced models whereas the OLED panel could be an option for the bigger sizes in select markets. Maybe the 75-inch variant or even a premium 55-inch variant would come with an OLED panel.
OnePlus TV may launch in late September
It's not something that is confirmed right now this way or that. It is possible that the OnePlus TV and the OnePlus 7T may launch at the same time. Or it is possible that both may get different launch events. It all depends on when the products are ready. The OnePlus 7T leaks, too, have surfaced, but so far, the indication is that the OnePlus TV is definitely ready for the launch while the OnePlus 7T is still in the works. With its new products, and particularly with the OnePlus TV that is a completely new product from OnePlus, the company may want to capitalise on the festive season in India that is going to be in October. Hence, there is the talk of OnePlus TV launching in late September or early October.
