Netizens hail the legend of Chris Gayle as Universe Boss becomes Windies' highest-run scorer in ODIs

Chris Gayle on Monday overtook Brian Lara to become the West Indies’ highest run-scorer in One-Day International (ODI) cricket. Gayle, playing his 300th ODI match for the Caribbean nation, made the special day even more memorable as he etched his names in the record books. Gayle, who had a cold T20I series against India, didn’t have a splendid outing against the Men in Blue in the second ODI at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad as he was dismissed for 11 by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. However, he managed to eclipse Brian Lara for the mighty record.

Lara, who played 299 ODIs, had scored 10, 348 runs for the Windies. And interestingly, Gayle surpassed the milestone of scoring the most runs for the Windies in ODIs on the same day he broke Lara’s record of playing most ODIs.

Most ODI runs for West Indies:

10348 Brian Lara

8778 S Chanderpaul

8648 Desmond Haynes

6721 Viv Richards

6248 Richie Richardson

Gayle and Lara are only the two Windies player to touch the 10,000-run mark in the shorter format of the game. Apart from Gayle and Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul had 8,778 runs under his belt while former Windies batter Desmond Haynes had 8,648 runs under his belt. The great Vivian Richards had 6,721 runs to his name while Richie Richardson had 6,248 runs to his name.

Gayle, after surpassing Lara for the massive record of scoring most runs for the Windies, has now played most ODIs for a Windies player (300), has scored runs for the Men in Maroon (10, 353), has most ODI centuries by a West Indian under his belt (25). The 39-year-old also has the highest score by a West Indian to his name in ODIs (215). He has also smashed most sixes (325) and taken most outfield catches (123) by a Windies player.

Netizens were left mesmerised by the genius of the Universe Boss as they hailed Gayle for being a legend of the game. While some termed him ‘GOAT’ (greatest of all time), many were of the opinion that he has been a true legend of the game.

Here's how netizens reacted

The Windies skipper Jason Holder, ahead of the match, said that the entire team wants to win the match for the batting maestro while congratulating the Universe Boss for an outstanding career.

“It is a big match for Chris Gayle, I would like to congratulate Gayle for an outstanding career so far. We want to win this game for him,” Holder said after the toss.
