The UX 300e made its debut today at the 2019 Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in China, which is being held from 22 November–1 December.

The vehicle is based on Lexus' UX compact SUV — a hybrid car — albeit with the addition of new aerodynamic wheel designs and underbody cover.

'Lexus has always focused on providing a distinctive driving performance and that remains true in its development of its first battery-electric vehicle,' a Lexus spokesperson said.

'Taking the signature refined driving performance of the UX as their starting point, its engineers were able to leverage the qualities of the new electric drivetrain to further enhance the vehicle’s on-road performance.'

'At the same time, the UX 300e has one of the quietest cabins in its class, building on Lexus’s excellent record of sound management.'

'To address the environmental problems facing our planet, we need to promote the widespread use of electrified vehicles at the right times, using the right solutions, and in the right places for each market,' said Lexus president Yoshihiro Sawa.

'Ultimately, by 2025, all Lexus models will have electrified versions, and we are aiming for the sales of electrified models to outpace those of gas models.'

The UX 300e sports various connected car features — with the downloadable LexusLink app allowing drivers to remotely adjust the vehicles climate controls and monitor its battery charge and safe driving range.

App users will also be able to see a timer that indicates when a full charge will be stored, alongside creating charging schedules designed to take advantage of times at which the vehicle is not going to be used or when energy prices are low.

The vehicle's batteries are also equipped with a temperature management system and multiple monitoring systems that ensure the power cells are not overcharged.

Electric vehicles are naturally quiet in the absence of an engine and transmission — although this can make external noises like those made by the wind and driving over gravel more noticeable.

To combat this, Lexus engineers have built the UX 300e with additional insulation to ensure a 'comfortable and tranquil cabin environment'.

While in motion, the car's active sound control system will transmit natural, ambient sound to the driver and passenger to communicate the driving conditions.

The combination of the UX 300e's battery and motor location underneath the vehicle body and refined front/rear weight distribution gives the car a low centre of gravity that allows for excellent driving performance.

'The engineering team has delivered outstanding battery reliability and adopted the latest connectivity technology to maximise the car’s everyday usability and functionality with smartphones.'

'The efficiency of the motor, inverter, gears and high-capacity battery was maximised, again with the benefit of the experience Lexus gained in developing hybrid vehicles.'
