1st ODI (Full scorecard) Brief scores: Australia 288 for 5 in 50 overs (Glenn Maxwell 11*, Marcus Stoinis 47*. Bhuvneshwar Kumar 66 for 2, Mohammed Shami 46 for 0)

India decided to go into the first one day international of the three-match ODI series with five bowlers at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

India decided play Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami and Khaleel Ahmed as the bowling options with Virat Kohli did not choosing to look at the positives.

"We would have batted first as well but a couple of players were inclined towards chasing. It's a brilliant wicket to play on, with shorter boundary on one side. It's going to be an exciting chase as I am always inclined towards chasing. That's always not the team plan, we need to take a collective decision," Kohli said at the toss.

"Anyway, we have to bowl first now. We are always looking to improve as a side. We need to restrict teams to a lesser total - something that's difficult these days. We need to strike when the big games arrive. When two quality players (Hardik and Rahul) are not featuring, it upsets the balance of the side. There are few guys who've got a chance to prove themselves. Jadeja is back in the ODI side, let's see what he's got to offer," Kohli added.

What Team India skipper was Mohammed Shami being forced off the field with a small discomfort with his back and neck at the start of the 15th over of the Australian innings.

Kohli unsure of Shami's return, needed someone to bol the overs. He threw the ball to Ambati Rayudu with Dinesh Karthik being picked ahead of Kedar Jadhav, who generally rolls over his arms for a few overs.

Rayudu, not a regular bowler by any stretch of imagination, came on to bwol his right-arm off breaks in the 22nd over.

With Shawn Marsh and Usman Khawaja looking good, it was a risk for India. He went only for 3 runs in his first over but his action made social media sit up and take notice.

People joked about Rayudu's action, with some even calling into question the legality of it all. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar felt Rayudu's action resembled that of the Sri Lankan spine wizard Muttiah Muralitharan.

Rayudu returned to ball a just another over with the Australian pair of Marsh and Khwaja belting the part-time spinner for 10 runs.

Kohli was relieved to see Shami running back onto the field shortly after and that was all from Rayudu in terms of rolling his arm over.
