In line with the central government's thrust to make India a major defense manufacturing hub, a firm based in Bengaluru, Karnataka, has developed the country's first indigenous sniper rifle prototype for use by the Indian armed forces.
SSS Defense, which has developed two sniper rifles, is hoping to lead the way for India to become an arms manufacturing and export hub. Managing Director (SS) of SSS Defense said, 'After the introduction of' Make in India 'in the defense sector, we started designing and developing these rifles. We became one of the few manufacturers allowed to develop weapons in the country. "Satish R. Machani told ANI on Sunday.
The 61-year-old company previously manufactured components (mainly springs) for the automotive industry. "We are also supplying components for the defense sector. Our idea is to have a complete system of weapons for our forces and we hope to eventually become an arms exporter. Obviously, we have a lot to build our weapons. More work will have to be done. We have an excellent research and development center globally, "said Machani.
The company is also building an 80,000-square-foot arms factory at Jigani for its manufacturing unit. Explaining the work of the weapons, CEO Vivek Krishnan said: "We have developed high-end sniper rifles caliber 7.62x51mm and .338 Lapua Magnum platforms.
Each rifle uses a branded action that is inspected, Gauge, handwork and precision is done. Barrel length options range from 20 inches to 24 inches, depending on mission criteria and the environment of use ".
