Lionel Messi's three sons lifted his sixth Ballon d'Or in the pre-match build-up and then watched their dad score his 35th La Liga hat-trick as Barcelona strolled to a comfortable 5-2 win over strugglers Mallorca at the Nou Camp.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored at least three goals in the same game 34 times but Messi has now passed that milestone. There are more milestones ahead – he'll count this goal towards winning the next Ballon d'Or in 12 months' time.
There was also a sublime Luis Suarez backheel and a Marc Andre ter Stegen assist as Barcelona went 4-1 up at half time.
Lionel Messi showed off his newly-won Ballon d'Or at the Nou Camp before taking on Mallorca
The striker edged ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo by winning the trophy for a sixth time on Tuesday
Antoine Griezmann ended his run from the halfway line by clipping Barcelona's opening goal
It was difficult to judge which of their goals had been more extraordinary: first, Antoine Griezmann scored from a Ter Stegen assist after six minutes – the second time this season the German keeper has set-up a goal.
He did it for Suarez against Getafe and here he was sending Griezmann racing clear. The Frenchman provided a run and finish worthy of the quick-thinking assist, with a little help from Mallorca's back-pedaling defence.
Then came two golden goals from the six-time golden ball winner Messi who presented his latest Ballon d'Or to the Nou Camp crowd before the match.
Messi's first came after he took a short pass from Griezmann outside the Mallorca area and curled the ball left footed into the top corner past Manolo Reina.
That was on 17 minutes. He found exactly the same spot on 40 minutes after good work from Frenkie de Jong and Suarez. And what came next topped even the brilliant Messi double and Griezmann's goal from Ter Stegen's pass. It left the Nou Camp with a collective dropped jaw.
Frenkie de Jong played a wall-pass with Sergio Roberto and fed Suarez who, with his back to goal, somehow got the power and precision into an audacious sand wedge back heel past Reina into the back of the net.
Barcelona began the night three points behind Real Madrid but were soon on course for a win
Messi has now scored 617 goals for Barcelona, doubling their lead before adding another pair
Mallorca boss Vincente Moreno watched Ante Budimir give his side hope with a first-half strike
It was four; it could have been six with Suarez hitting the post and Sergio Busquets going close with a header. But they did also concede when Salva Sevilla played in Ante Budimir who got to the ball ahead of Clement Lenglet to score past Ter Stegen.
In the second half, Messi went for a hat-trick of long-distance left foot curlers but sent the ball over. For Mallorca, Budimir was soon also on a hat-trick. He got his second, rising majestically to head in Fran Gamez' cross.
It was no more than Mallorca deserved. They had brought on Watford loanee Cucho Hernandez but left on Budimir and the impressive Real Madrid loanee Take Kubo to play with three forwards.
Luiz Suarez scored the most audacious goal of the night, adding Barca's fourth with a backheel
The Uruguay forward's balletic goal sent Barcelona into a commanding 4-1 lead at the interval
Barca will hope Messi and Suarez can inflict similar damage on Madrid in their next home game
Two of them combined to create a possible third for Mallorca. Kubo touched the ball on to Hernandez and only a strong one-armed save from Ter Stegen prevented him repeating his scoring feat from last season when he was on loan at Huesca.
Messi did get his hat-trick of left foot curling shots. This time he was at closer proximity and the ball hit the net off of the underside of the crossbar.
It was his 15th goal in 14 games against Mallorca. They shouldn't feel special – he does it against everyone. In ten days' time Barcelona fans will hope he can do it – as he has many times before – against Real Madrid.
